With deep Montana ranching roots going back to 1919, Stephen Yellowtail, a member of the Crow Nation Tribe, is the fourth generation of cowboys to operate on the reservation. For Stephen, ranching is a family business. On their family’s 12,000-acre property, he and his father train horses and tend to their own 500-head herds. Accomplished and well-rounded, Stephen graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with an Industrial Engineering degree. When he wasn’t in the classroom, he was busy playing Division II basketball, where he dominated the court. But after college, the cowboy life came calling, and Stephen wouldn’t have it any other way.
