When they hear about a train with a full safe, Butch and Sundance plot one of the West's greatest train robberies. Their devious plan is to use official Union Pacific lanterns to signal the train and fool the engineer into believing a bridge is out.

Mannon, known as the fastest gun in the West, shoots Festus and rides his mule, Ruth, into Dodge City to kill Marshal Matt Dillon. He terrorizes everyone in town, including brutally attacking Kitty. Matt returns and confronts Mannon.

Cheyenne is guiding a buffalo hunting party that Marshal Lestrade is leading. Lestrade's daughter Lily and Senator Carr are in the group. Cheyenne finds a herd, but a mysterious gunshot sends the buffalo on a stampede. Cheyenne is suspicious.

Con man Jack Scully comes to North Fork with his friend, Reuben Miles, a simple-minded young man who is fast with a gun. Scully uses the young gun to win money by coaxing people into gunfights. Lucas becomes the next target.

Hannah Shaw waits excitedly for New York artist Jeremiah Crowley to come to North Fork to paint her portrait. When he finally arrives, Hannah discovers he is a drunkard and is in trouble with the law. Lucas, as acting marshal, tries to help him out.

Butch Cassidy hopes to start a new life in Lander. However, a former outlaw friend named Idaho wants him to help rob the train they are on. Cassidy denies the offer and in turn, Idaho causes issues.

Guest Star Burt Reynolds. Festus's nephew, Eliab Haggen, comes to Dodge on a mission to shoot off Festus's ear. He wants revenge since Festus bit off a piece of his dad's ear years ago in a fight.

Steve Prescott, son of wealthy rancher Vic Prescott, is hurt in a wagon accident. Dr. Samuel Mudd, waiting on a stage at the Sherman Ranch, operates and amputates Steve's left arm. Steve's father is angry; he views Mudd as a traitor from the past.

Guest Star James Garner. Cheyenne learns of an impending attack against a cavalry troop traveling through Indian territory. Going against the commanding officer's route, he leads a mutiny to avoid a certain massacre.

Guest Star June Lockhart. Nat and Polly are planning to get married. But, Polly's brother learns that Nat visited another woman and believes that Nat has dishonored Polly. After Nat is shot on his wedding day, Matt Dillon investigates.

Hide skinner Emmett Dooley believes that he killed one of his hunting companions while he was drunk. He turns himself in to Matt Dillon who doesn't think that he could do such a thing. Matt hunts down the real killer.

Jake Kaiser and his buddies hang Frank Tilman, thinking that he is a horse thief. But, they find out too late that they may have just lynched the wrong man. The joke's on them as someone is now killing them off one by one.

Dan Clell, a card dealer, arrives in Dodge City to work in the Long Branch Saloon. Tom Cassidy, the town drunk, is normally a peaceful man, but he tries to attack Clell. Matt Dillon must find out what is going on between the men.

Four bandits get away with $2800 from a robbery. Bandit Cyrus Pike is wounded but is able to take the money for himself. On the run, he finds refuge with Sally Fergus, an old junk dealer known as Dirty Sally. All is well until the bandits arrive.

Cyrus Pike mends from his gunshot wound and helps Sally at her home. He is appreciative of her kindness which reforms him. They become close friends. Pike must decide whether to leave for her safety or stand his ground and confront the gang.
