Lauren Bacall
At age 20, Lauren Bacall married Humphrey Bogart, who was 25 years older than her. No one thought it would last … but Lauren knew better. She thought that Bogart was a wonderful man, and she felt very lucky to have him in her life.
Together, they had two children: Stephen Humphrey Bogart, born in 1949; and Leslie Howard Bogart, born in 1952. When Humphrey Bogart died of cancer in 1957, he left Bacall a widow with an 8-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter.
Lauren Bacall would marry Jason Robards in 1961, and she gave birth to her son, Sam Robards, later that year. The pair divorced in 1968, with Bacall saying it was due to Robards’ heavy drinking.
Bacall once said, “I had one great marriage. I have three great children and four grandchildren.” And in her book, By Myself and Then Some, she wrote: “My life has had meaning, with the friendships full and valuable and essential to me … My children, Steve, Leslie, and Sam, are all different—all first-rate human beings with high standards … They all have wit and a sense of humor and, thank God, I have hung on to mine.”
