It’s high noon in Dodge City and an unmasked villain stands firmly in the middle of the town square, ready to draw with U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon. It’s a Western showdown. While a showdown can be expected in legendary Westerns such as Gunsmoke starring James Arness or The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance starring John Wayne, it is hard to believe that these types of duels were often occurrences in the Old West and came to shape Western heritage, history and film.
With that in mind, here is a list of the top five showdowns in Western history.
