1: Quigley Down Under

Quigley Down Under is Selleck’s strongest Western. Showcasing sharp wit and sharper shooting skills, his portrayal of the long-range rifleman Matthew Quigley is unforgettable.

As is the case with so many of the genre’s best films, this one benefits from a great bad guy. Alan Rickman’s sinister villain elevates the entire movie, but it’s Selleck’s quiet confidence and iron backbone that make the film. Directed by Australian-native Simon Wincer, the same man that led Lonesome Dove, it wins points for its accuracy to the area and exploration of topics outside the norm for modern Westerns.

The beautiful land and some of the era’s strongest cinematography make this one of the most visually compelling Westerns of its time. Though not a box-office hit, the film has earned its place in pop culture—gamers worldwide often refer to two kills with a single bullet as a “Quigley.”

Selleck’s performance is a testament to his versatility, proving he’s more than just a pretty face—he’s also a Western legend.
