Return to Meet the Artisan
Stan Fraser Stan Fraser hails from the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, where his Caribbean parents emphasized education over his growing attraction to fashion design. Little did they know his fashion education was already forming as he watched his mother and uncle sew samples for several of New York’s fashion houses. As he honed his skills and began developing his own, unique style, he felt a need in the industry for high-quality, premium Japanese selvedge denim. And so began his Anarke brand.
What do you enjoy most about your craft? I enjoy designing, creating and constructing garments.
What drew you to your chosen craft? My mother inspired me to become a designer and learn garment construction. Growing up I watched my mother sew for several fashion houses. I would keep her company while she sewed and then deliver the garments she made.
If you could spend a day with a master of your craft (past or present), who would it be and why? I would spend a day with Hidehiko Yamane, founder of Evisu Genes. He specializes in raw selvedge denim like my line, and Evisu started the trendiness and innovative designs of selvedge denim.
